Peace Quest, Inc.
My name is Deirdre Smith, CEO/Director of Peace Quest, Inc. As an African American woman, I
experienced how painful and confusing it was growing up in America at the end of the 20th
Century. I was often the only African American child competing in baton twirling competitions
across the United States. During one particular competition, I over heard a judge declare that my
team lost because I was black. I became devastated and heart broken. I did not have the desire to
compete anymore because I did not want to hold my team back from victories. As I grew older, I
wanted to turn my negative experience into a positive platform to combat ignorance and
prejudice.
In April 1995, I put together a group of fifteen multicultural, multi-ethnic experienced actors to
develop a weapon to fight back. The weapon is an emotionally powerful play, "Dear Child," that
deals with social change focusing on RACISM, SEXISM, and VIOLENCE. The group separately
wrote scenes for the play from their individual experiences. All of these pieces together represent
the torn fragments of our society and wonderfully create the theatrical experience of a lifetime.
Created as a letter to an unborn child, the play's fragments are held together by the beautiful
birth of life, the same life we later tease, abuse or kill. We do not preach right from wrong, but
show the importance of choices. The show explains that all of the choices we make in our lives,
despite the toughness of the situations, have consequences that can affect a lifetime. We provide
an environment where people can reflect on their lives, cry for themselves and begin to deal with
the past through the experiences of the characters. We allow the audience to realize their own
flaws and relish in the beauty of all human life. We perform to make people aware of the
injustices that exist in our society as well as to celebrate the resilience of the human spirit. Today,
we continue to perform at many venues including junior and senior high schools, universities,
community centers, juvenile detention centers and main stages.
The cast of “Dear Child” makes up the staff of Peace Quest Inc., a non-profit organization that
works to bring people together regardless of race, creed, color, economic status or gender in
order to bridge the gap of communication and to foster an understanding that all people are
important. We believe that love, unity & communication can begin to change this country into the
sweet land of liberty that it is meant to be.
Peace House
Peace Quest, Inc. has added Peace House, an arts educational facility located in Los Angeles,
California. Classes at Peace House will include: Screen writing, spoken word writing &
performance, theater, voice, dance including ballet, jazz & hip hop, gymnastics & Teen Chat- a
class that focuses on building self-esteem for elementary aged children, pre-teens & teenagers.
We will also have a mentor/tutoring program. The more advanced classes will culminate with
live performances.
Peace Day
In 1996, Peace Quest Inc. introduced Peace Day, a free community event that brings adults, kids
and teens together from different cultural, social and economic backgrounds to enjoy a celebrity
panel discussion on peace, educational workshops, informational booths, live entertainment,
activities, games, food and much more. The entire day is free!!
Peace Quest, Inc. is preparing for its 12th Annual Peace Day on Saturday, October 6th. This year we are joined by “The People
Station” 100.3 The Beat. With the recent violence on Los Angeles streets and freeways as well as
the racial tension on local high school campuses, the 12th Annual Peace Day is very important this
year. We would like to invite you to join Peace Quest, Inc. in promoting interaction and
communication across cultural, social and economic lines. Help us foster the understanding that
all people are human and the only way to the beauty of the human spirit is through
communication. By supporting the 12th Annual Peace Day, you show your support for peace in
this diverse Los Angeles community. We need your help to make the 12th Annual Peace Day
bigger than ever.
Please see the enclosed sponsorship opportunities to see how you can help.
